Jon was kind enough to do a fairly comprehensive review of the EMP CD, and as on one else has done so yet, I'm forwarding it. EMP is STILL Available, see http://soli.inav.net/~kent/emp.html I'm selling it for $10 postage paid; or $5 and a tape of your own music. David Talento (legion@voicenet.com) has been cutting deals on them for bits of music gear, if you can believe that ;-) P.S. BUY THREADS from fluid@hyperreal.com as well. P.P.S. A cassete-only release from Ememrgent Behavior "Local Maxima" available now, check http://soli.inav.net/~kent/music.html ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Thu, 19 Sep 1996 09:33:07 -0700 From: Jon Drukman <jsd@cyborganic.com> To: Kent Williams <kent@inav.net> Subject: Re: emp REVIEW TIME... forward as appropriate... SQUISHY: A nice mismash of styles and influences with excellent production (although the drums are a little thin and static for me). The opening melodic motif is very Tdreamy, then the production kinda hints at Jarre, then when the drums come in it's sorta Kraftwerky... End result, nice and melodic with some tasty ambienty noises. A little "digital" for such a combination of classic influences but not too bad. PURE GAMMA: Pure Tangerine Dream, late 70's. You can tell he REALLY wants a Mellotron to be playing those big strings. Still, he's got the sound down to a T. The analog pulsing sequence thingie is dead on, and the switch around 4:27 is totally perfect. It's eerie! This guy is really Chris Franke in disguise, right? ALTRUISTIC SUICIDE: Reminds me of Delerium, specially what with the vocal sample. Drums are a bit muddy, could use some more top. Lemmee guess, DR660? Nice but it ends just as it's getting going. DESTOK: Again, a more digital version of late 70's Tdream (maybe more on the Klaus Schulze side). Berlin school in full effect boyeee. Nice. STUDIO 893: Ah yes, breakbeats. That's more like it. The fill is a little jarring, the timbales don't seem to quite fit. The arppegiated bits are cool but the stabby organish lead thing doesn't quite work, it doesn't seem to flow as well as it could. Still, gotta love a fellow K2000 maniac. MARK PULVER: Jean-Michel Jarre, absolutely 100%. Reminds me a lot of something off "revolutions". Produced pretty well although I expected a few more "sprinkly bits" what with it being a jarre homage and all... Nice changeup towards the end, it sorta morphs into Tdream. SWEEPING THE NOISE FLOOR: Get this guy together with Namlook... NOW. EMERGENT BEHAVIOR: Even if the song sucked, I would have to give it a thumbs up because anybody who samples Homer Simpson going "forbidden donut" just wins on style alone. Fortunately, it doesn't suck. However, buy yourself a good compressor right now. You won't believe the difference it'll make. If the drums punched harder you'd have a dancefloor hit. What kind of setup do you have anyway? There's a million little changes I'd make to the mix. The big chordal string should have some kind of chorus or phaser on them to make them sweep more. The weird background texture should be louder, boost the midrange and drop the low end so it is more prominent but doesn't interfere with the bass/drums. Etc... LX RUDIS: Nice techno/trance groove but the production is all wrong for dance music. The main kick/snare thing sounds like someone's idea of what dance club music is like without having been to too many dance clubs (although the breakdown to just the ticky 808-ish snare is very good). The more industrial noisey bits are even better though. More of them, less of the rigid drumming. RIC MILLER: Kraftwerk on Line 2 with a look 'n' feel lawsuit, Mr Miller... MARK PULVER: Another interesting Jarre meets Tdream hybrid. The drum stuff bugs me though, a little too rigid and in yer face about its drummachineeyness. Know what i mean? LX RUDIS: Reminds me of Philip Glass what with all the repeating figures. But I don't like Philip Glass that much. STUDIO 893: Very cool 'n stylish ambienty but rhythmic piece. I likes. And, unlike most of the other pieces, it isn't trying to be anything other than what it is, so it can't be compared unfavorably to something else. Great.

that's a regular network router. we have one of those and it works fine. plus it's a cisco so lots of people understand it. unfortunately for our isdn network we have a bunch of ascend routers and they all suck. plus they don't give you any information when they don't like their configuration, they just hang up peremptorily.

ha. i am under a lot of pressure to do the perfect mix tape now cos my agent thinks he can get me tons of gigs overseas if i give him a really spiffing 90 minute mix. plus yet another guy from the net randomly asked me if i wanted to dj for a party. so weird. i don't advertise myself as a dj anywhere that i know of but every month or so some net dude says "hey we're doing a party and we want to get you in for it." so far none of them have panned out.... maybe this one will be different...
